People and Politics - a celebration of nonconformity

Success against the odds

'Tin Crisis hits Geevor' march just climbing East Hill, Tuckingmill,Camborne, on 24th May 1986

The Cornish are ‘different’. Non-conformity and success against all odds is celebrated.

Larger-than-life figures abound throughout Cornish history. Mavericks and innovators include Bishop Trelawny, imprisoned for refusing to implement James II’s religious policies, Richard Trevithick, the remarkably ingenious engineer and adventurer, and Capt William Bligh, who, after the ‘Bounty’ mutiny navigated an open boat from from Tofua, one of the Friendly Islands, landing in Timor, Java.

Cornish politics reflect this individuality, nourished by the creation of the Duchy of Cornwall and the Stannaries.

Rebellion in 1497 against taxes for war against Scotland, and in 1549 when the new Prayer Book was introduced, a distinctive role in the Civil War, and an enduring relationship between Methodism and Liberal politics exemplify radical traits.

VCH Cornwall’s Religious History project will identify personalities who influenced rebellion and reformation; research on Penwith will show how individuals have shaped communities and influenced political action.
