Legend has it that Cornwall was trading in tin long before the coming of the Romans and that the introduction of saffron dates from these early times.
People in Cornwall have always farmed the land and fished the sea; generations have also extracted mineral wealth from below ground. Technical and engineering innovations led to improvements in agriculture and mining and created employment in industry and transport. Cornish men and women took their expertise around the world.
Today Cornwall is in the forefront of international communications, while its distinctive history and culture provides a context for an increasingly important tourist industry.
Current research for VCH of Cornwall includes work on the fishing communities of Mounts Bay and on local farming and mining which provided essential income for families when fish was scarce. |
