This area of the site will build into a resource for students and teachers looking for teaching aids and information related to both the subjects of the VCHC studies and the history of Cornwall in general.

It will also be the place where you can view work projects completed by students of the schools and colleges of Cornwall.

We would very much like you to contribute information that you think would be useful for teachers or of interest to students at all levels. This area will be updated regularly as new information is received.

So whether you are a community history group, an individual with a specific historical interest or a professor with decades of formal research to your credit, we would like to hear from you.

The pilgrims assemble at Ludgvan Church
The pilgrims assemble at Ludgvan Church

In glorious sunshine Students, staff and parents of Camborne School and Community College followed the ancient pilgrims' way from Ludgvan Church to St Michael's Mount. This was the final part of a project they had been working on during the previous academic year under the England's Past for Everyone project "the religious history of Cornwall up to the time of the Reformation".

Lead by Mr John Welham, an Advanced Skills Teacher who has put together a teaching pack to tie in with the new paper back book 'Cornwall and the Cross - Christianity 500-1560', the pilgrims walked from Ludgvan to Marazion and then across the causeway to St Michael's Mount.

and stopped off at our exhibition on Folly Field, the pilgrims made their way across the causeway to St Michael's Mount, where, as it was a Saturday, special permission had been given for them to have lunch in the castle grounds, followed by a Treasure Hunt.

Excitement was mounting as at 3.00 p.m.------

the pilgrims gathered by the Change House to wait for the Bishop of Truro who had agreed to lead them safely back to the mainland. Also waiting for the Bishop were Lady Mary Holborow, Lord St Levan and Piers Thompson, our Vice-Chairman.

Eventually, the Bishop of Truro arrived to lead them home.

However, the youngsters - and we - were in for such a treat. Not only one bishop, but the Bishop of St Germans was there accompanied by The Dean of Truro, The Archdeacon of Cornwall, The Archdeacon of Bodmin and the former Archdeacon of Cornwall. Their robes made such a spectacle in the bright sunshine.

they arrived at Marazion to be met by Lady Banham, our Chairman, who had been patiently waiting below the Godolphin Hotel to welcome them home.

the young pilgrims patiently listened to the formal speeches to launch the first book to be published by the Victoria County History in Cornwall for over one hundred years - exciting for we adults - but their coach was waiting to take them back to school, so they were given their pilgrim's meal of bread and biscuits, made to medieval recipes, and sticks of cheese and a carton of apple juice to sustain them on their journey. (It seemed such a long time since Mel Hackett, our Communications Officer, down from London for the day, was sitting making up the bundles that morning!).

It has been a very long wait ------

For our former County Archivist it has been a wait of more than ten years for this moment, how eagerly she pores over the book. At this point none of us knew how well the launch of this important book was going to go. Well done Cornwall.

Thank you students and staff of Camborne School for making this such a special day.

Congratulations to Nicholas Orme, who has worked quietly and steadily to produce a really colourful, interesting and readable book. It has been worth the wait.

A CELEBRATION!

The final plans have been made for the culmination of the Religious History Schools' Project when students from two Camborne Schools, Camborne Science and Community College and St Meriodoc's Primary School will make a pilgrimage following part of the ancient St Michael's Way and across the Causeway to St Michael's Mount.

They will spend about an hour and a half on the Mount before being led by The Reverend Bill Ind, Bishop of Truro back across the Causeway to a marquee specially erected on the Folly Field.

Once their they will be offered 'medieval' sustenance before setting off by coach for their homes. Weary, but we hope full of good memories of a special day.

Full details of the schools' project will be posted next term.
